Grove City History
At the beginning of the 19th century there was nothing more than trees situated in the area known as Grove City. After being carved into Jackson County, the trees were cleared so farming could commence. Very slowly, the area became more populated as agriculture started to flourish, however by the 1850’s only 50 residents called the Village of Grove City their home. It would be almost an entire century before the population would reach 1,500 residents as frontier areas gave way to homes and railroad tracks allowed for a slow economy to thrive.
During the 1920’s, Grove City was known for its entertainment. Folks would arrive to:
• Bet on the horses at Beulah Park, the first thoroughbred racetrack in Ohio.
• See movies at the Kingdom Theatre
• Dance at Grant’s Auditorium
• Dine at one of the many family restaurants
After World War II, just like many cities across the country, there was a baby boom. The economy was aided by automotive production and nearby plants supplying parts. Adding to the economic growth was the construction of two interstates, one running east-to-west and a second running north-to-south through Grove City.
