Columbus History
Columbus history is traced back to the 1660’s when the area was under control by the French who maintained their dominance for nearly 100 years. In the mid-18th century, fur traders began moving into the area which started off wars between the French and the Native Americans. By the 1740’s, Pennsylvania traders started settling with greater frequency and eventually rid the Ohio territory of the French. The French and Indian War and the Seven Years War were pivotal and violent events that paved the course of Columbus and American Independence.

In 1803, Ohio became an official state and Columbus was chosen as the capital due to its central location. It actually became official in 1812. Prior to the Civil War, the Underground Railroad was very active in Columbus and during the war it was a major base for Union troops. Manufacturing became a major economic force in the second half of the 19th century and Columbus was home to major companies including those who manufactured buggies. In fact, Columbus with its two dozen buggy manufacturers became known as the Buggy Capital of the World.

Today, Columbus is a growing and thriving downtown area. It has recovered from the Great Recession well and is considered one of the ten best big cities in America.
